Naples
Caserta & Naples
The Royal Palace of Caserta — 1,200 rooms and 120 hectares of gardens — paired with the Naples old town
Sightseeing
Why We Love it
The largest royal residence in the world by volume, and almost nobody on a Naples trip goes — the park alone runs away from the palace in a single sightline.

The Experience
Nine hours built around the Royal Palace of Caserta, commissioned by the Bourbon King Charles III in the 18th century and designed by Luigi Vanvitelli. Over 1,200 rooms and 1,790 windows, a grand staircase that does exactly what it was built to do, the Throne Room under gilded frescoes and chandeliers, the Royal Apartments and the Gallery of Mirrors. Outside, 120 hectares of park run away from the palace in a single sightline — the Great Waterfall, the Fountain of Diana and Actaeon, woodland and terraces.
The afternoon returns to Naples for Piazza del Plebiscito, Teatro di San Carlo, the National Archaeological Museum and Spaccanapoli.
My pick for anyone who has done the ruins already, and for travelers who like Versailles and don't know this exists.

Need to Know
Nine hours, departing from downtown Naples
Private — your party only, in your own vehicle
Do not book this on a Tuesday. The Palace, the Park and the Archaeological Museum all close, which is the hardest blackout in the Naples set
The Palace is open 8:30 am to 4:00 pm; the Park 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
The palace is very large and unlabelled. A three-hour guide is worth the money here
The park is walkable but long. Shuttle and bicycle hire are available on site
Entrance fees are paid on site in euros, not in advance — carry cash
Cancellation follows the supplier's policy — we confirm the exact terms in writing before you pay
