Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik & Cavtat

Dubrovnik's Old Town on foot, then the coast road south to Cavtat

Sightseeing, Local Culture

Why We Love it

Cavtat isn't a drive-by — the same guide walks it with you, past the Racic Mausoleum and St. Nicholas, so its Roman roots and Renaissance revival actually land.

Spellbound Images & Cut Outs - 36 copy.

The Experience

Five hours through two Adriatic towns with a private guide and a car: the fortified centre of Dubrovnik on foot, then the coast road south to Cavtat.

Dubrovnik first, through the cobbled streets of the old maritime republic — Sponza Palace, the Church of St. Blaise, the Rector's Palace, and the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque layered on top of each other over the centuries.

Then the coast road south, the Adriatic and the islands on one side, to Cavtat. A promenade of cafés, fishing boats and stone houses. Behind it, narrow streets, the Racic Mausoleum and St. Nicholas Church — a town that was Roman first, then a Renaissance revival, then a retreat for artists and writers.

My pick for first-timers who want the Old Town explained rather than just wandered, and for anyone who would rather see a second town than double back through the same streets.
