Naples

Herculaneum & Sorrento

Herculaneum — better preserved than Pompeii and a fraction as busy — then an afternoon in Sorrento

Sightseeing

Why We Love it

The Villa of the Papyri gave up a library of carbonised scrolls scholars are still reading — that's what Herculaneum kept and Pompeii didn't.

Spellbound Images & Cut Outs - 36 copy.

The Experience

Nine hours from Naples, starting at Herculaneum. The same eruption buried it as buried Pompeii, but under different material, and the result is a site where homes, shops and baths survive far more completely — including the Villa of the Papyri and its library of carbonised scrolls. It is also markedly less crowded.

Then Sorrento for the afternoon: Piazza Tasso, the limoncello workshops, the coast from Villa Comunale Park, and the 15th-century Sedil Dominova, with free time before the drive back.

My pick for repeat visitors to the Bay of Naples, and for anyone who finds Pompeii's crowds a poor trade for its scale.
