Naples

Herculaneum Half Day

Four hours at Herculaneum — less famous than Pompeii, far better preserved, and a fraction as crowded

Sightseeing

Why We Love it

Upper storeys still standing, shops and baths intact, frescoed villas — Herculaneum shows you rooms where Pompeii shows you outlines.

Spellbound Images & Cut Outs - 36 copy.

The Experience

A half day from Naples to Herculaneum, buried by the same AD 79 eruption as Pompeii but under material that preserved far more. Houses, shops and public buildings survive with upper storeys intact. The House of the Skeletons holds the remains that gave the first real evidence of how the eruption killed. The Decumanus Maximus runs through the middle, lined with baths and frescoed villas. The Villa of the Papyri gave up a library of carbonised scrolls that scholars are still reading.

A two-hour guided tour is recommended and can be added at extra cost.

My pick for second-time visitors to the bay, and for anyone who wants a Roman town they can actually picture people living in.
