Naples

Mount Vesuvius Half Day

Up the volcano that buried Pompeii — a 45-minute climb to the crater rim at 1,281 metres

Sightseeing

Why We Love it

You look into the crater, turn around, and see everything it buried laid out below — no other stop in the bay does both.

The Experience

A half day from Naples to Mount Vesuvius, with an optional guided hike of roughly 45 minutes up to the crater rim at 1,281 metres. From the top the Bay of Naples, the Sorrento peninsula and the plains below are all in one view — including the ground the AD 79 eruption buried.

It is a stratovolcano and still one of the most active in Europe; the last major eruption was 1944. The soil that came out of it is why the vineyards on its flanks are worth the detour.

Book early — crater tickets are timed and sell out. My pick for anyone doing Pompeii or Herculaneum on another day, and for travelers who would rather climb something than walk around it.
