Naples

Naples in a Day

The old city on foot with a car waiting — Spaccanapoli, Santa Chiara, the Farnese marbles and a pizza that justifies the trip

Sightseeing

Why We Love it

The mosaics and frescoes people go to Pompeii for are here in Naples — lifted off those walls and hung in the Archaeological Museum.

Spellbound Images & Cut Outs - 36 copy.

The Experience

Nine hours in the UNESCO-listed historic centre. Piazza del Plebiscito with the Royal Palace and San Francesco di Paola, the exterior of Teatro di San Carlo, and Galleria Umberto I under its glass dome. The National Archaeological Museum holds one of the great Greco-Roman collections anywhere — the mosaics and frescoes lifted out of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the Farnese sculptures. The Cloister of Santa Chiara is the quiet counterweight: Gothic bones, majolica tilework, a garden most visitors never find.

Lunch is a Neapolitan pizza somewhere unremarkable-looking, and then Spaccanapoli and San Gregorio Armeno, the street where the nativity figures are carved year-round, before Castel dell'Ovo on the water with Vesuvius across the bay.

My pick for anyone who has written Naples off as the place you pass through to reach Capri.
