Paella Cooking Class

Five courses, ten secret steps, and a cooking station for every one or two guests

Food & Wine

Why We Love it

Step one of the ten secret steps is a sip of wine, and you cook rather than watch — several pans go at once, so you taste more than your own.

The Experience

Three hours at the Paella Club in central Barcelona with professional chefs and a five-course menu, starting with a glass of cava.

Each cooking station is shared by one or two guests and comes with its own utensils and ingredients, so you cook rather than watch. The chefs work through what they call the ten secret paella steps — step one is a sip of the wine. Depending on the size of the class, several varieties get made across the room, so you learn and taste more than one.

The workshop itself takes 45 minutes to an hour. While the pans finish, everyone sits down together for the chef's other courses, then the paellas, then dessert, with Catalan wine poured throughout.

My pick for travelers who want to cook rather than watch a demonstration, and for anyone whose idea of a good night out is a long table and a glass that keeps getting refilled.
