Naples

Pompeii & Paestum

Three Greek temples older than anything in Pompeii, then Pompeii itself — a private day across two civilisations

Sightseeing

Why We Love it

Paestum's temples are among the best-preserved Greek buildings anywhere, better than most of what survives in Greece, and the coach tours don't go.

The Experience

Nine hours from Naples across two very different ancient worlds. Paestum first, founded by Greek colonists in the 6th century BC: three Doric temples standing almost intact, the amphitheatre and forum, and a museum holding the painted slabs of the Tomb of the Diver — one of the only surviving examples of Greek figurative painting from the period.

Then Pompeii for the Roman half: the Forum, the Villa of the Mysteries and its initiation-rite frescoes, the amphitheatre, and the House of the Faun with its mosaics.

My pick for travelers who have done Pompeii and want something they haven't seen, and for anyone who finds Greek architecture more moving than Roman.
