Naples

Pompeii & Sorrento

Pompeii in the morning and Sorrento in the afternoon — the simplest good day out of Naples

Sightseeing

Why We Love it

Two stops rather than three, so there's still free time in Sorrento at the end — Piazza Tasso, the limoncello shops, and the 15th-century Sedil Dominova most people walk past.

Spellbound Images & Cut Outs - 36 copy.

The Experience

Nine hours from Naples with only two stops, which is the point. Pompeii first — the Forum, the amphitheatre, the frescoed villas, the House of the Vettii — then Sorrento, perched on the cliffs above the Bay of Naples: Piazza Tasso, the artisan shops still making limoncello, the coastline from Villa Comunale Park, and Sedil Dominova, a 15th-century building most people walk straight past.

There's free time in Sorrento before the drive back, which the three-stop itineraries don't leave room for.

My pick for a first day out of Naples, and for anyone who would rather see two places properly than three in passing.
