Paris

Private Giverny Half-Day Tour

An hour out of Paris to the garden Monet built in order to paint it

Sightseeing

Why We Love it

The water lilies and the Japanese bridge are this garden — and the colors on the house are the ones Monet picked himself, still there.

Spellbound Images & Cut Outs - 36 copy.

The Experience

Four and a half hours with a private car and an English-speaking guide, collected from your hotel lobby in Paris and driven an hour north to Giverny — a village on the right bank of the Seine, fifty miles out.

Monet saw it from a train window and decided to move there. He rented the house and the land around it until he had earned enough to buy both, then filled the garden with rare plants ordered from all over the world so that he would have something to paint. The water lilies and the Japanese bridge are all this garden.

He enlarged the house with a shed at either end and a balcony along the façade, and picked its colors himself — the same ones on it today. His first studio was a room inside that later became the drawing room, where coffee was served after lunch and he showed his newest work; the third, built in 1916 for the very large canvases of his last years, is the shop now. Entrance fees are paid separately.

My pick for anyone who cares more about how a painter actually lived than about palaces, and for a summer visit, when the planting Monet designed is in bloom.
