The Experience
Four hours from your hotel lobby in Florence with a private car and English-speaking driver, out to where the streets end and the cypress, olive groves and vines begin.
First Greve in Chianti, a small village of old porticoes and long views over the countryside, and the birthplace of Giovanni da Verrazzano — the first European to reach New York Harbor. Then the wine roads to an old winery: down into the cellar, past the barrels, through how the wine is made and how it's drunk here. A tasting follows, with extra virgin olive oil alongside it.
You have to be 18 to taste, and the fee is paid there rather than included. If nobody in the party cares much about wine, the winery comes out and another village goes in — Castellina, or Panzano. Then the drive back to your accommodation.
