Venice

Row and Eat like a Venetian

A rowing lesson in a batellina, then cicchetti and wine at two bàcari

On The Water, Food & Wine

Why We Love it

Nobody puts you on the water cold — you practice the stroke tied up at the dock, and push off only once everyone has it.

Spellbound Images & Cut Outs - 36 copy.

The Experience

Two and a half hours on the north side of Venice with an instructor and a batellina, once one of the most common boats in the city and still the easiest one to learn in. You start tied up at the dock, on the basic stroke. You push off when everyone has it.

From there it is down the quiet Cannaregio canals and out into the lagoon. On the way back you stop at two bàcari on the Misericordia canal for cicchetti — crostini built on seafood, meat, vegetables or cheese — and a run of regional wines.

My pick for families, since children under six row with a parent, and for anyone who would rather do something in Venice than look at it.
