Naples

Sorrento, Positano & Amalfi

Three coastal towns in one private day — Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi, no ruins, no rushing

Sightseeing

Why We Love it

Positano's Byzantine icon and Amalfi's paper museum are what those towns were actually for — the boutiques came much later.

The Experience

Nine hours from Naples through the three towns that define the coast. Sorrento first, for Piazza Tasso and the Basilica di Sant'Antonino and the artisan shops that have been making limoncello for generations. Then Positano, its streets narrowing between boutiques and galleries down to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and its Byzantine icon. Then Amalfi, for the Duomo's mosaics and dramatic staircase, and the paper museum that records what the town actually did for a living.

Entrance fees and lunch aren't included, and there's little to pay for beyond the Emerald Grotto — this is a day of walking, looking and eating.

My pick for a group with mixed appetites for archaeology, and for anyone who wants the coast at a walking pace.
