Florence

Wine Experience in Tuscany

Two Chianti Classico wineries in five hours, with the old cellar and the pecorino

Food & Wine

Why We Love it

The second estate pours over pecorino, salami and cured ham, which is the part people remember — and it runs afternoons, not just mornings.

The Experience

Five hours out of Florence with an English-speaking driver-guide who spends the 45-minute drive on Tuscany and how the wine here actually gets made: two Chianti Classico wineries, one after the other, with a tasting at each.

At the first, a wine expert walks you through the farm and the ancient cellar — the old barrels, the process, the parts that never make it onto a label — then pours the wine and the extra virgin olive oil produced on site. A short ride to the second estate, another overview, and this time the tasting arrives with food: pecorino, salami, cured ham and bruschetta, with olive oil and balsamic alongside.

It runs twice a day, morning and afternoon, in a shared group capped at 25. There's no hotel pick-up — you meet at Piazzale Montelungo by the train station and go from there.

My pick for a half day out of Florence when a full one is too much, and for anyone who would rather understand the wine than just drink it.
