Augustine, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Prague occupies a complex of seven historic buildings in Malá Strana, with 101 guest rooms including 20 suites. The hotel has private access to a still-active Augustinian monastery through the Garden of Eden and its arcades, with monk-guided tours of the monastery, church and historical library on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Refectory bar is housed in the Augustinians' former dining room under a restored double-vaulted baroque ceiling, and serves St. Thomas beer, first brewed on the property by monks in the 14th century. Augustine Restaurant serves a modern European menu with Czech dishes drawn from Augustinian chronicles, and the monastery garden is used for summer dining, with garden barbecues and live jazz on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The spa has a Finnish sauna and steam room, a hammam treatment room, four treatment rooms and a Technogym training area.
WHY WE LOVE IT:
The monastery is still active, and you reach it through the hotel's own Garden of Eden arcades — on Tuesdays and Thursdays a monk walks you through the church and the historical library. The bar is the monks' old refectory: double-vaulted, baroque frescoes restored, pouring St. Thomas beer that was brewed on this site in the 14th century. One suite sits in the former astrological tower with 360 degrees of Prague around it. Olga Polizzi did the interiors, setting Augustinian order against Czech cubism.
